46 ramps are now available for use at the lake, including the new ramp at the existing Alligator Dock No. 1 location and intermittent use of the “new” Halcomb’s Landing ramp.

Several more ramps are scheduled to be extended, including one at the “new” Alligator Dock No. 1 location.

Lake Cumberland Vacation Is up for Grabs in Sweepstakes - Canadians Can Sign up this Month for Contest

MONTICELLO, Ky – Beach balls, tubes and towels will spell fun for the Canadian winners of a houseboat vacation at Kentucky’s Lake Cumberland in Travel South USA’s Discover the Southern Way Vacation Sweepstakes.

Part of Travel South USA’s 12-month series of vacation giveaways in 12 southern states, the Kentucky trip is featured for Canadian contestants to sign up this month. The giveaway offers houseboat accommodations for six people for four nights (Monday afternoon through Friday morning). The boat will be docked and cruise out of the Conley Bottom Resort in Monticello, one of the most beautiful spots on Lake Cumberland.

The trip winner can take the vacation from April 15 through June 15, 2008 or Aug. 15 through Oct. 15, 2008. Fuel is included for this luxurious cruising home on the water, along with two-day rental of tubes, skis, wakeboards and kneeboards. The houseboat has all the comforts of home, with a completely furnished kitchen and a grill on the deck.

Conley Bottom is located in the heart of the lake, a beautiful adventure-lover’s paradise in southeastern Kentucky. With some 35,000 acres of water, Lake Cumberland is one of the largest man-made reservoirs east of the Mississippi River. Anglers can test their skill with a variety of fish, including striper, walleye, bass, catfish and bluegill. Moor the boat in a secluded cove and enjoy hiking, biking, picnicking and fishing from shore. The beauty of the lake provides a perfect way to slow down and escape from the everyday routine.

BECOMING AN OUTDOORS WOMAN - WORKSHOP SET FOR SEPT. 21 – 23 AT LAKE CUMBERLAND

The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources along with the Kentucky Network of Outdoor Women and the Kentucky 4-H Leadership Center in Jabez, Ky., will host a three-day Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) Workshop Sept. 21 – 23 for women 18 and older interested in learning outdoor skills.

Pre-registration is required and is now underway through Sept. 10. The workshop fee is $180 and includes all meals and lodging for two nights, general sessions and materials and transportation to and from workshop class sites. Registration forms are available by calling toll free 1-800-858-1549 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (Eastern time) on weekdays. The workshop begins with check-in at 11 a.m. (Eastern time) on Friday, Sept. 21 and concludes at noon Sunday, Sept. 23.

There will be four outdoor instructional sessions during the weekend. After hours optional sessions will also be offered. Participants may choose from a variety of classes including fly tying, fishing, basic shot gunning and rifle shooting, archery skills, deer hunting, turkey hunting, survival skills, canoeing, Dutch oven cooking and wildlife identification, among others.

Accommodations are dormitory style and participants may request to room with their friends for the weekend. Previous participants may receive a discount for bringing a first timer to this event.

According to Spivey-Minch, women find recreation related to hunting, fishing, boating and wildlife watching, for example, as enjoyable as men do, once they learn more about it and have the chance to do it. BOW workshops are designed for women to “get their feet wet” with professional instruction from a teacher whose goal is to make sure participants have fun, and come away with confidence in their new skills.

“There’s no better way to learn casting and basic fishing skills, firearms safety and operation and other handy tips that help us enjoy the world around us, than coming to an Outdoor Woman Workshop,” said Spivey-Minch.

Sessions are geared to beginner level, and designed to give participants a good base level of knowledge so they can build on that knowledge at home or elsewhere.

LAKE CLEAN UP EVENT - REMINDER

Driftwood cleanup set for August 25-26

Driftwood now clutters the shoreline of Lake Cumberland in many areas and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is looking for help from local communities to remove the debris.

Volunteers are needed August 25 - 26 between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. for what may be some rigorous, yet rewarding, activities to help clean up driftwood left on the shore and perhaps made more visible by the lake drawdown.

Volunteers will be asked to help carry driftwood down to the shoreline, where it then will be chipped by The PRIDE of the Cumberland or burned later in the year, probably in the fall, when air quality conditions are optimal. Dates for burning will be coordinated with the Kentucky Division of Air Quality and the Kentucky Division of Forestry. The project will involve heavy lifting and walking on rough, steep terrain, so the day’s activities will not be appropriate for children.

Assembly locations will include Waitsboro Recreation Area, Conley Bottom Marina, Rowena Landing and Grider Hill Marina. The Friends of Lake Cumberland will provide lunch and work gloves for participants.
